A foggy morning sunrise
January was a very wet month for the mountain with the rain gauge topping 8 inches (most of that coming in a three day period). The roads held up very well due to the maintenance they received in December however, a problem did a rise on Cherokee Trail. With all the runoff from the mountain a wet spring developed on the right side of that road causing the road bed to become very soft and muddy. The wet spring flowed for almost a week continuing to damage the road with the water flowing down the side and across the entire surface causing dangerous driving conditions. At that point it needed to be fixed. Cowee Grading was contacted and a solution was discussed and implemented. The outcome was to trench along the path of the spring (above and below where the water was coming from) then across the road to the drainage culvert. After the trench was dug fine gravel was placed in the ditch then a drainage pipe was place on the gravel followed by more fine gravel. The road was re-graded and a load of crusher run was dumped on that and smoothed out. We plan to put some hay straw on the exposed clay to help control erosion.
In my time on the mountain I had never seen anything like this. Cowee Grading says it will dry up when we get out of this very wet weather but it can reappear at any time. I hope the solution we have put into place will control the issue in the future. This was an unexpected and unplanned repair that cost the association $1,700.00 and will hurt our operation fund for the remainder of the year. On a good note we have had several snow falls on
the roads and they continue to hold up very well. I do ask that where the roads are wet from thawing please drive slow and pick a good place to drive through
the area.
Looking forward to Spring.

A Cautionary Note ... For Your SafetyThis was received in an email ... and thought it would be a good thing for everyone to know. Let's all be safe in 2013. Carla Fink.
This gives us something to think about with all our new electronic technology. GPS A couple of weeks ago a friend told me that someone she knew had their car broken into while they were at a football game. Their car was parked on the green which was adjacent to the football stadium and specially allotted to football fans. Things stolen from the car included a garage door remote control, some money and a GPS which had been prominently mounted on the dashboard. When the victims got home, they found that their house had been ransacked and just about everything worth anything had been stolen. The thieves had used the GPS to guide them to the house. They then used the garage remote control to open the garage door and gain entry to the house. The thieves knew the owners were at the football game, they knew what time the game was scheduled to finish and so they knew how much time they had to clean out the house. It would appear that they had brought a truck to empty the house of its contents. Something to consider if you have a GPS - don't put your home address in it.. Put a nearby address (like a store or gas station) so you can still find your way home if you need to, but no one else would know where you live if your GPS were stolen. |
